New Solar Carport and Largest Raised Roof Canopy in NYC

NGEM Energy Management Technology’s Division helps NYC businesses find alternative solutions to go Green. Haeboon L Park and Mondial Automotive are two unique customers of NGEM Energy Management  located in Queens New York, who have looked  back in 2016, to help find new solutions to install Solar Power where space was limited.

Haeboon L Park (also B&H Nara LLC) located at 147-19 Springfield La, Jamaica NY is in business since 1980.  Haeboon L Park is minority owned providing US Customs Services to the import industry right here in Jamaica NY.  When Linda Park, Business Owner met NGEM solar sales team, she express the desire to go green and save energy; however the rooftop was limited in space to provide enough power to support the entire electric load.  That’s when NGEM suggested an investment in a Carport to satisfy the total energy consumption while providing shelter for the employee’s cars.  NGEM Engineering team developed a project that would support a 35 KW Carport and presented the investment financials to both Linda and her accountant.    For a small business this was substantial project, but the ROI made sense and the company was doing well enough to invest in Solar! NGEM reviewed the project financials and opportunity and agreed that it made good sense, however we never built a solar carport and this one was large.  Following the engineering team’s research on carports, and an extensive review concerning the safety for our in-house installers, it was agreed to move ahead. The NGEM team worked together to develop a safe environment and coordinate with employees on safe access to the building during construction.  Additional provisions were made in the design to completely cover the parking area from rain or snow run-off.

The Carport was completed February 10, 2017 and is made up of 108 Photovoltaic Panels rated at 320 Watts shown in the pictures below.   The total system will provide 34.56 KW and there are additional panels on the rooftop for a total solar output of 40.96 KW dc reducing their carbon footprint by 36 tons of greenhouse gases.

New Solar Carport and Largest Raised Roof Canopy in NYC

Mondial Automotive located at 114-14 14th Road, College Point NY 11356 was founded in 1956. Mondial Automotive is one of only eight Borg Warner Franchise Distributors in North America.  The company stocks a complete line of re-manufactured and new alternators, starters, carburetors, turbos, injectors, pumps, as well as filtration products for heavy-duty industrial and marine engines.

Mr. Showky Kaldawy , Owner has been doing business with NGEM for years in supplying NGEM with parts for their “Power Systems” division.  After years of a working relationship, NGEM Solar team visited their site in College Point to discuss Solar Energy.  It turns out that when NGEM team inspected the rooftop they realized that space was not suitable for roof top solar.  In a further engineering review and discussion, it was agreed that a separate structure could make good sense.  The team prepared an alternative option to raise a complete structure over the whole roof to optimize a total of 11,500 square feet of real estate to install panels.

This is one of the biggest rooftop construction projects in NYC with Steel Columns starting at 9 feet high above the rooftop running over the AC equipment approximately 125 feet in the length of the building.  There were many faces to the constructions process, Starting with the coordination of our steel contractors to erect the channel to the rooftop to and preparing the work space with lifts and harnesses for safe operations for our NGEM installation team. NGEM VP explains safety is our business and this project was critical in developing a site construction plan that would account for all unforeseen obstacles.  Our employees and customers are our first priority, and this type of installation requires critical planning at all levels.

The Solar Raised Project was completed August 5, 2016 and is made up of 528 Canadian Photovoltaic Panels rated at 320 Watts shown in the pictures below.   The total system will provide 168.9 KW with estimated savings of 198,450 kWh or $31,000 per year in electric.

MarJam News

News Event:

NGEM awards MarJam Building Supply for installing large solar project to support three of their major supply facilities in Brooklyn NY!

NGEM Energy Management Helps the MarJam Supply Company dba GreenDepot Environmental Living & Building, to Unveil a 728 Thousand Dollar Solar Panel System back in 2013.  MarJam Supply entered into a contract with NGEM Energy Management  to design and build one the largest solar generators in the area, 339 Kilowatts in Total!

The systems were installed on three of the warehouse facilities in Greenpoint Brooklyn, the main company headquarters since 1979.  Since its opening, MarJam’s mission has been to provide a highly specialized customer service driven distributor of lumber, plywood and other construction materials to the local building trades.  This strategy has resulted in continuous and sustained growth.   The Company now operates 33 "Super Centers" in 12 states that serve the entire East Coast of the U.S. and is one of the most respected businesses in the competitive construction supply industry in the United States.

Today the company has grown to a dedicated staff of nearly 800 professionals that they affectionately call "MarJamers".  What makes MarJamers unique?  In a highly competitive industry they stand out because they focus on the needs of our customers and solve customer problems.   Under the GreenDepot umbrella,  MarJam also supplies a full line of “environmental conscience supplies” to encourage its trades to build our communities as green as possible and solar was a perfect fit for this organization.

When NGEM Energy Management Solar Power Team approached them back in June of 2013 with an opportunity to participate in Governer Coumo’s NY Sun Competitive Photovoltaic (PV) Program, it was the perfect opportunity to reduce their very own Carbon Footprint. Both NGEM and MarJam worked together to define three projects that would qualify for funding under the Project Opportunity Notice (PON 2589).

All three projects have been commissioned by NGEM as follows:

  •   8 Rewe Street, was put online September 2014 and is generating 99 KW.

  • 16 Rewe Street was put online October 2014 and is generating 125 KW

  • 20 Rewe Street was put online December 2014 and is generating 115 KW

NGEM’s Certified Solar Engineers provided the expertise needed to design and develop the systems from the ground up, working closely with the City of New York Building’s Department and Con Edison to come up with a design configuration to maximize the roof space and manage the outside transmission facilities in this region of low capacity.

The total project included 1,130 solar panels rated at 300 watts each and was awarded $400,664 in solar funding from NYSERDA over a three year period.  The customer was also eligible to receive the 20% NYC Solar Property Tax Abatement and a 30% in Federal Investment Tax Credit.

“We anticipate all three photovoltaic generating systems will provide MarJam with an energy savings in the amount of 386,460 kwh per year (or just over $600,000 in electric savings) while reducing their Carbon Footprint by just over 300 Tons Annually!”

"With all the City, State and Federal Benefits, our 1.1 million dollars investment is projected to pay back within a 3-4 years period!   The timing was just right, because the longer we waited less we would have received and we are glad we made it a priority in 2013” Says Jim Holiber of MarJam Supply Co.
